What to do in times of corona?

First, thank God (or Buddha, Allah, Marx, Zeus, Elvis, Coincidence or whoever or whatever your favorite deity may be) that you’re healthy. Our very own Space Marine Dino K caught the infection and had a very tough time. But he was not the only one, Steven E also tested positive on corona and caught the flu and pneumonia, Steve appeared to recover first, but spent several days in the hospital. Read his FB story here. Dino and Steve are both back home again and we wish them a speedy full recovery!

All events are canceled, until, we think now, June.

Personally I must say that I miss the social side of gaming most. Fun, bad jokes, beer, rolling dice with friends, etc. True, painting and collecting rules and miniatures and reading books and blogs are important, but not very, for me it’s only a third of all the joy.

Anyway. Because optimism is the only antidote and people need distraction in crisis times, I share a few suggestions and links.

Generic historical wargame rules

So you miss your buddies and your wife and kids are the only human beings around? Try the 1hr wargame rules. As easy as chess. Any opponent will understand the rules and I promise you a fun game. Link here, 12$ only. Found a free PDF on the web, btw, not sure about copyright.

The 1HW author recommends 1/72 miniatures that can be bought online in Holland from 1/72 specialist Miniatuurwereld (link), a company that also sells 28mm HäT and Victrix.

Ancients

The Plastic Soldier Company announced a 15mm kickstarter with the Mortem&Gloriam rules. The plastic models are remastered from quality metal miniatures, and cast in hardplastic Ultracast. The launch will be delayed, but Lurkio (the company from M&G-author Simon Hall) offered the hardcover rules with 50% discount for 20GBP, link here.

Dark Ages and Fantasy

No, we’re not sponsored by CCGwinkel, but during hard times, we think that small shopkeepers in Holland that work hard for their money need more support than big foreign companies. If you want to buy warriors for Saga, or fantasy miniatures, take a look at their new Wargames Atlantic range (link). Value for money – we Dutchmen like that.

Napoleonics

A free fastplay quick Napoleonic wargame that had positive reviews is 2×2 Napoleonics, available here. Game can be played with cards on a table, for example the free downloadable cards from Blücher. Or the cheap pewter 2mm units from Irregular, so far still in business.

WW2 and 40K

Again: Koopt Nederlandsche Waar! Tabletopper.nl sells a lot of stuff online, not only Bolt Action, Warlord Games, X-Wing but also 40K and the GW paints.

40K-fans: Tale of Painters is IMHO one of the best 40K-painting blogs.

Naval

League of Augsburg author/painter/manufacturer published a how-to-paint 1/2400 pewter sailships guide. Ships are from Tumbling Dice, 2,40 per model.

Board Games

Amsterdam Board Game specialist shop Friends & Foes is closed for visitors, but they deliver their stuff at home. F&F mostly sell quality board games. Miniature players might like their X-Wing stuff, their last Star Wars Legion stock and the miniature board games they sell.

And next year, when Amsterdam looks like the picture below, but worse – remember how beautiful 2019 was!

Goed nieuws voor clubleden – we hebben er een clubleger bij! Tweeënnegentig 28mm Beieren geschikt om zowel tégen als mèt Napoleon te vechten, de Beieren waaiden met alle winden mee. Ons doel als club van het begin af aan was om veel terrein maar ook wat legers te hebben, zodat je gewoon bij ons binnen kunt lopen voor een casual game zonder figuren te hoeven kopen. We hadden al WO2 voor Bolt Action. Je kunt nu ook bij ons binnenlopen en Sharp Practice etc spelen als generaal Von Wrede – perfecte naam voor een generaal trouwens.

De figuren zijn de verguisde hard plastic 28mm HäT-Bavarians. HäT maakt voornamelijk 1/72 en heeft hun masters gebruikt voor deze voor hen ongebruikelijke schaal. Hun figuren zijn daardoor niet heroic, niet multipart en niet microscopisch gedetailleerd. Maar het grote voordeel van hun productiemethode is dat hun doosjes ongelooflijk goedkoop zijn: 10 euro per doos, aangeschaft bij Miniatuurwereld, slechts 30 euro voor 92 figuren in allerlei verschillende houdingen, snel in elkaar te zetten. Deze onbetaalbare aanslag op ons clubbudget kon geheel gefinancierd worden uit de entree voor het Sharp Practice-evenement deze maand op de club.

Basing is individueel op vierkantjes, gemagnetiseerd van onder. Kortom: geschikt voor massaslagen zoals Black Powder, grotere skirmish-games zoals Sharp Practice en kleinschaliger games zoals Songs of Drums & Shako’s met losse, individuele bases.

Het schilderwerk, geheel gratis en voor niks behalve voor de lol van het schilderen, is voor rekening gekomen van uw webmaster himself, om iedereen te laten zien dat je ondanks goedkope figuren en snelschilderwerk met Quickshade prime tabletop kwaliteit kunt verven, zonder uren te priegelen. De allergrootste lol is echter als dit leger een paar keer per jaar uit de kast komt om daadwerkelijk door deze of gene gebruikt te worden. Pak en probeer! Figuren moeten vechten, niet verstoffen! Wees wreed en geniet ervan!

Vier tafels en een schildertafel vandaag, Sharp Practice, Warcry, Black Seas met nieuwsgierige nieuweling Renzo en Bolt Action.

Hoogtepunt was een gedicht van Marc H. El Presidente El Tjo had een Sharp Practice – scenario rondom een actie op/om/tegen/voor een hoofdkwartier waar enige hoofdmannen een dramavoorstelling gaven met een mooi gedicht. Is weer eens wat anders dan een geheime code. Leider der Denen Marc H liet zich op zeker moment uitlokken tot het voordragen een gedicht, een geimproviseerde limerick die Denen liet rijmen op wenen, dus het zal wel weer over de om-te-huilen-resultaten van zijn voetbalclub West Ham zijn gegaan.

Uw razende reporter meent overigens te begrijpen dat hij de slag gewonnen heeft, dus het rijm heeft geholpen.

Everybody was gone. De duvel en zijn ouwe moer – beautiful Dutch for the whole goddamn crew – was last week at Poldercon, this week at Warcon or next week at the club, or at the next ABB 40K competitive tournament February 23rd. Emptiness all around. Nobody booked. We almost canceled this club day – two tables is more or less a minimum. We’re heading towards 40 members and still – was this Abandonment Day?

But Nick & Scott booked and showed up and played a fun 40K game.

Nick joined us last month and today Scott also undersigned a contract in blood, with us devils. Welcome! May you live merrily ever after!

Besides, we had a newcomer, Jim. I played a quick game One Hour Wargames against him, with old 1/72 stuff donated by Rob and others. Excellent introductory game. 6 bases per side, simple rules, smart scenario’s – a fast kind of dice chess with good old soft plastics.

I lost. Did I mention that? I lost against a total newbie. I’ll try to forget this fateful day.

When Jim was gone I started to paint our new Napoleonic club army, cheap HäT 28mm Bavarians, 92 figures for only 30 euro, for the Sharp Practice game day. It’s an upgraded 1/72 set cast in hard plastic, excellent value for money.

Sure, single piece hard plastics are not as finely detailed as the ‘heroic’ 28mm fatboys in resin sold by Warlord etc. Or white metal miniatures. However they can be painted quickly and are useful, cheap playing pieces that look good enough at arm’s length on any table.

I will speedpaint, quickshade & base them for the Sharp Practice event in March, and publish my own painting review later.
